During the spring of my junior year, I studied abroad (through Living Routes) in Findhorn, Scotland.  Findhorn is a spiritual, eco-village located in northern Scotland near the North Sea.  This community was founded upon the idea of co-creating with nature – plant devas, nature spirits, and the divine essence.  Findhorn was born in the early 1960s and membership took off in the late 1960s and early 1970s, when word got out that fifty-pound cabbages were being grown on sand, in Northern Scotland.  The cabbage myth is only partially true – the cabbage was over twenty pounds – but people around the world flocked to Findhorn.

Present day Findhorn is beautiful, complex, and enlightening.  This community is going through a constant shift with members coming and going constantly.  Many members joke that Findhorn is a spiritual airport—people come to Findhorn to strengthen their connection with nature and move forward entering into “the real world” after a few years.  The community is comprised of 300 - 400 community members with all different levels of involved, occupations and background.  Over the years Findhorn has developed into an international, transient community comprised of people of all ages.

During my stay at Findhorn, I worked at the Cullerne Gardens a few times a week, took four intensive courses – Exploring Self and Community Through the Arts, Worldviews and Consciousness, Applied Eco-Village Living, and Group Dynamics --, and learned a tremendous amount about my path and myself.  While in Findhorn I focused heavily on my own personal growth, as I felt extremely empowered by going through this program with 12 other women, all of who are on very different life paths.
